“Do not seek to have events happen as you want them to, but instead want them to happen as they do happen, and your life will go well.”
What this quote means
Epictetus teaches radical acceptance of reality. Instead of fighting against what happens, we should welcome events as they are. This attitude reduces suffering and allows us to live more peacefully. It does not mean passivity, but a wisdom that consists of distinguishing what we can change and what we must accept.
How to apply it daily
When faced with an unexpected situation, repeat to yourself: 'This is how it is, what can I do with it?' and act accordingly.
