“The cinema substitutes for our gaze a world that conforms to our desires.”
What this quote means
Bazin highlights cinema's power to shape reality according to our desires, offering an escape where our aspirations come to life. This resonates because it captures the essence of cinematic art: a distorting mirror that reveals our dreams. It applies when we seek in films an answer to our expectations, comfort, or inspiration for our own existence.
How to apply it daily
Select a film that aligns with a personal desire or dream and watch it mindfully, noting how it reshapes your perception of reality.
