“Tragedy is restful; in tragedy, everything is inevitable, hopeless, and known. Comedy is restless; in comedy, everything is possible, even hope.”
What this quote means
Anouilh contrasts tragedy, where everything is predetermined, with comedy, where hope remains possible. This reflection illuminates our relationship to life: sometimes we cling to fatalism out of comfort, while comedy invites us to seize possibilities. Hope, even 'dirty', is a driving force.
How to apply it daily
Identify a situation you believe is hopeless. Ask yourself: 'What if I were in a comedy?' Imagine three unexpected solutions and try one.
