Seán MacBride, born in Paris in 1904, was an Irish politician and activist. Son of Maud Gonne and Major John MacBride, executed for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising, he joined the IRA at 13 and fought in the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. He founded the political party Clann na Poblachta in 1946 and served as Minister for External Affairs (1948-1951), contributing to the declaration of the Republic of Ireland. He played a key role in establishing the Council of Europe and drafting the European Convention on Human Rights. Co-founder of Amnesty International in 1961, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974 for his efforts to secure and develop human rights.
