About
Marie Under, born March 27, 1883, in Tallinn (then Reval) and died September 25, 1980, in Stockholm, was a major Estonian poet. A founding member of the Siuru literary group in 1917, she revolutionized Estonian poetry with her expressionist and neo-romantic style. Her first collection, Sonetid (1917), was an immediate success. She also co-founded the Estonian Writers' Union and the Estonian PEN Club. Exiled in Sweden after the Soviet occupation in 1944, her works were banned in Estonia. A prolific translator, she rendered works by Goethe, Schiller, Ibsen, Baudelaire, and Rimbaud into Estonian. Her remains were repatriated to Tallinn in 2016.
