About
Isabelle de Charrière, born Isabella Agneta Elisabeth van Tuyll van Serooskerken in 1740 at Zuylen Castle, was a writer and composer of Dutch origin who settled in Switzerland after her marriage in 1771. Known as Belle van Zuylen, she wrote exclusively in French. Her novels, such as Lettres neuchâteloises (1784) and Caliste (1785-1788), blend philosophical reflection and psychological observation. Influenced by Diderot and Rousseau, she criticized aristocratic privilege and religious orthodoxy while opposing revolutionary radicalism. She died in 1805 in Colombier.
