Marcus Aurelius
Roman Emperor, Stoic Philosopher
Biography
Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD) was a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. He was the last of the rulers traditionally known as the Five Good Emperors. His personal philosophical writings, now commonly known as Meditations, are a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. They have been praised by writers, philosophers, and statesmen for their wisdom and practical advice on living a good life. Aurelius' reign was marked by military conflict, including wars against the Parthian Empire and various Germanic tribes. Despite these challenges, he is remembered as a philosopher-king and one of the most respected emperors in Roman history.
