Noah Webster, né le 16 octobre 1758 à West Hartford, Connecticut, est un lexicographe américain. Diplômé de Yale en 1778, il publie son célèbre 'Blue-Backed Speller' (1783-1785), qui se vend à des millions d'exemplaires. Son dictionnaire de 1806 et surtout son 'American Dictionary of the English Language' (1828) standardisent l'orthographe américaine et intègrent des mots spécifiques aux États-Unis. Webster apprend une vingtaine de langues pour étymologies. Il contribue à la loi sur le droit d'auteur de 1831 et meurt en 1843.
