Gore Vidal, né Eugene Luther Gore Vidal Jr. à West Point, New York, est un romancier, essayiste, dramaturge et scénariste américain. Il a écrit 25 romans, dont la série Narratives of Empire, et des œuvres marquantes comme The City and the Pillar (1948), l'un des premiers romans américains majeurs à traiter ouvertement de l'homosexualité, et Myra Breckinridge (1968), satire sur la transsexualité et la culture américaine. Il a remporté le National Book Award pour ses essais en 1993 et a reçu la médaille du National Book Foundation en 2009. Il a également été candidat politique et a publié deux mémoires.
