“The emotion is Negro, as reason is Greek.”
What this quote means
This famous formulation by Senghor, co-founder of Négritude, contrasts the emotion attributed to Black peoples with the reason attributed to Greeks, in an attempt to valorize African cultural contributions. It has been controversial because it seems to essentialize differences, but it aimed to rehabilitate a form of sensitivity specific to Africa against Western rationalism. It invites us to recognize the diversity of ways of knowing and not to hierarchize cultures.
