Zadie Smith, born Sadie Adeline Smith in 1975 in Willesden, north-west London, to an English father and a Jamaican mother, studied English literature at Cambridge. Her debut novel, White Teeth (2000), won several awards and brought her literary fame. She has since published The Autograph Man (2002), On Beauty (2005, Orange Prize), NW (2012), Swing Time (2016), and The Fraud (2023), her first historical novel. She has also written essays, short stories, and a play. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a professor at New York University, she regularly contributes to The New Yorker.
