About
Xavier Tartakover, born Savielly Grigorevich Tartakower in 1887 in Rostov-on-Don, was an international chess grandmaster. A doctor of law, he served in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, then adopted Polish citizenship. He represented Poland at the Chess Olympiads, winning team gold in 1930 and individual gold in 1931. A key figure of the Hypermodern School, he authored several influential works. During World War II, he joined the Free French Forces. Naturalized French after the war, he won the French Championship in 1953. He died in Paris in 1956.
