About

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and a major figure in Western art. He began painting at age 27 and produced around 900 paintings and over 1,100 drawings in a single decade. His work evolved from the dark tones of his Dutch period (The Potato Eaters, 1885) to a vivid palette and expressive brushwork after moving to Paris in 1886. In Arles in 1888, he created masterpieces such as Sunflowers and The Bedroom. After a crisis that led him to the asylum at Saint-Rémy, he painted The Starry Night. He died in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890. His posthumous fame is largely due to his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo.
