Viggo Mortensen, born October 20, 1958, in Manhattan, New York, is an American-Danish actor, filmmaker, writer, and musician. He spent his early childhood in Venezuela, Denmark, and Argentina before settling in Watertown, New York. A graduate of St. Lawrence University with a degree in Spanish and government, he made his film debut in Witness (1985). He achieved international stardom as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003). Nominated for three Academy Awards for Eastern Promises (2007), Captain Fantastic (2016), and Green Book (2018), he made his directorial debut with Falling in 2020. Founder of Perceval Press, he is also a published photographer and poet.
