About

Vesna Parun was born on April 10, 1922, on the island of Zlarin in Dalmatia. She studied Romance languages and philosophy at the University of Zagreb. Her first collection, Zore i vihori (1947), was criticized by socialist realists but marked a turning point in postwar Croatian poetry. Crna maslina (1955) established love and the sea as central motifs. She was the first woman in Croatia to earn a living solely as a freelance writer. She wrote more than twenty books for children, including Mačak Džingiskan i Miki Trasi (1968). She lived in Sofia from 1962 to 1967, where she was falsely accused of espionage. She received the Vladimir Nazor Award for lifetime achievement in 1982 and the Tin Ujević Award in 2003.
