Veronica Guerin was an Irish journalist, born on 5 July 1958 in Dublin. After studying accountancy and working in public relations, she turned to journalism in 1990. She joined the Sunday Independent in 1994, where she became a leading crime reporter, investigating Dublin's gangs despite threats. Her work earned her the CPJ International Press Freedom Award in 1995. She was murdered on 26 June 1996, prompting the passage of anti-money-laundering laws and the creation of the Criminal Assets Bureau.
