Vasco Pratolini was a major Italian writer of Neorealism. Born into a poor working-class family in Florence, he was self-taught. After a stay in a sanatorium (1935-1937), he co-founded the literary magazine Campo di Marte. During World War II, he fought with the partisans. His novel Cronache di poveri amanti (1947) became an international bestseller. His trilogy Una storia italiana (Metello, Lo scialo, Allegoria e derisione) covers Italian social and political history from 1875 to 1945. He also worked as a screenwriter with filmmakers such as Rossellini and Visconti.
