About

Valery Bryusov (1873-1924) was a Russian writer and a central figure of Russian Symbolism. Born in Moscow into a merchant family, he studied at Imperial Moscow University. In 1894-1895, he published three collections under various pseudonyms to establish the idea of a Symbolist movement. He founded the Scorpion publishing house in 1898 and edited the influential magazine Vesy (The Balance) from 1904. A prolific poet, he wrote major collections such as Chefs d'Oeuvre (1895) and Urbi et Orbi (1903). His historical novel The Fiery Angel (1908) is his most famous prose work. A prolific translator, he was recognized for his translations of French poets, Edgar Allan Poe, and Armenian poetry, earning the title of National Poet of Armenia.
