About
Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, born on 17 August 1932 in Trinidad, was a writer of Indian descent. Awarded a scholarship to Oxford in 1950, he settled in England. His novel A House for Mr Biswas (1961) is widely regarded as a masterpiece. He won the Booker Prize in 1971 for In a Free State, was knighted in 1990, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001 for works revealing 'suppressed histories'. He died in London on 11 August 2018.
