About
Urvashi Butalia, born in 1952 in Ambala, is an Indian feminist and historian. She co-founded Kali for Women, India's first feminist publishing house, in 1984, and later founded Zubaan Books in 2003. Her major work, The Other Side of Silence: Voices from the Partition of India (1998), is an oral history based on over 70 interviews with Partition survivors, which won several awards. She received the Padma Shri in 2011 and the Goethe Medal in 2017. She taught at the University of Delhi and is currently a visiting faculty at Ashoka University.
