About
Umberto Eco (1932-2016) was a major Italian intellectual. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Turin and became a professor of semiotics at Bologna in 1975. His first novel, The Name of the Rose (1980), was a worldwide success. He alternated scholarly essays and best-selling novels while contributing to the Italian press. His work explores the mechanisms of interpretation and mass culture.
