About
Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj is a key figure in Mongolia's democratic transition. Born into a nomadic herding family, he co-founded the country's first independent newspaper and led the peaceful 1990 revolution that ended communist rule. He served as Prime Minister twice (1998, 2004-2006) and as President from 2009 to 2017, becoming the first president not from the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party. He abolished the death penalty and later served on the International Commission against the Death Penalty. He founded the Elbegdorj Institute and has been a member of The Elders since 2022.
