Tony Judt, British historian born in London in 1948, studied at Cambridge and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Professor at New York University, he founded the Remarque Institute and taught at Berkeley, Davis, and Oxford. A specialist in contemporary Europe, he authored numerous works, including 'Postwar' (2005), a major synthesis on Europe since 1945. A prolific essayist, he contributed to The New York Review of Books and The New York Times. Stricken with ALS, he died in 2010 in New York.
