About

Tõnu Õnnepalu, born in 1962 in Tallinn, is a major figure in Estonian letters. After studying biology at the University of Tartu, he made his debut in poetry in 1985. His novel 'Piiririik' (1993), published under the pseudonym Emil Tode, achieved international success and became the most translated Estonian book of the 1990s. He has also published under the name Anton Nigov. A translator of Proust, Baudelaire, and Mauriac, he has directed the Estonian Institute in Paris and taught at the University of Tartu. His work explores nature, identity, and the human condition.
