Tom Clancy, born April 12, 1947, in Baltimore, was an American author. After earning a degree in English from Loyola University, he worked as an insurance agent before publishing his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, in 1984. The book's success, praised by President Ronald Reagan, launched his career. Clancy revolutionized the thriller genre by incorporating precise military technical details. He created the iconic CIA analyst Jack Ryan, hero of numerous novels adapted into films and television series. He co-founded the video game studio Red Storm Entertainment and became a part-owner of the Baltimore Orioles. He died on October 1, 2013.
