Titu Maiorescu (1840-1917) was a central figure in Romanian culture. As founder of the Junimea literary society and its journal Convorbiri Literare, he exerted a major influence on Romanian literature through his criticism. He developed the theory of 'forms without substance,' criticizing the superficial imitation of Western models. He also pursued a political career in the Conservative Party, serving as minister and Prime Minister. He was a member of the Romanian Academy and rector of the University of Iași.
