Tim Burton is an American filmmaker born in Burbank, California, in 1958. After studying at the California Institute of the Arts, he began as an animator at Disney, where he directed the short films Vincent (1982) and Frankenweenie (1984). His feature directorial debut, Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), launched his career. He achieved success with Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), and Edward Scissorhands (1990). Burton is known for his gothic and fantastical visual style, and for his collaborations with Johnny Depp and composer Danny Elfman. He also created The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and directed stop-motion animated features. In 2010, he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice.
