About

Tibor Sekelj, born in 1912 in Spišská Sobota (then Austria-Hungary) and died in 1988 in Subotica, was a Yugoslav explorer, writer and ethnographer. Graduating in law from the University of Zagreb, he lived in Argentina from 1939 to 1954, participating in an expedition to Aconcagua in 1944 that inspired his first book. He led two Amazon expeditions (1946, 1948) to study indigenous tribes, and a river in Brazil was named in his honor. Traveling to more than 90 countries, he wrote in Spanish, Esperanto, and Serbo-Croatian. His children's book Kumeŭaŭa, la filo de la ĝangalo (1979) was translated into over 20 languages and voted best children's book in Japan in 1987.
