Tawakkol Karman is a Yemeni journalist and activist, a leading figure of the Arab Spring in Yemen. Co-founder of the organization Women Journalists Without Chains, she organized weekly protests in Sanaa from 2007 to 2011 against the regime of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. In 2011, she received the Nobel Peace Prize, shared with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee, for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and women's rights to full participation in peace-building. The first Arab woman and second Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, she was also the youngest laureate at the time. She founded the Tawakkol Karman Foundation in 2016, focusing on sustainable development and empowerment of women and youth in Yemen.
