About

Born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta, Swami Vivekananda was the chief disciple of the mystic Sri Ramakrishna. He introduced Vedanta and Yoga to the West at the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 and Belur Math in 1898, combining monastic life with social service. His writings on the four yogas (Raja, Karma, Jnana, Bhakti) are classics. His birthday is celebrated in India as National Youth Day.
