Sue Gardner is a Canadian journalist born in 1967 in Bridgetown, Barbados, and raised in Port Hope, Ontario. She earned a journalism degree from Ryerson University and began her career at the CBC in 1990, working as a producer, reporter, and documentary-maker. In 2006, she became senior director of CBC.ca, then joined the Wikimedia Foundation in 2007, first as a consultant and then as executive director until 2014. Under her leadership, the foundation moved to San Francisco, experienced major growth, and organized the Wikipedia blackout against SOPA/PIPA in 2012. She later co-founded The Markup, a nonprofit investigative news outlet, and was elected chair of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network in 2023.
