About

Subramanya Bharathi (1882-1921), born Chinnasami Subramania Aiyar in Ettayapuram, is regarded as the father of modern Tamil literature. A precocious poet, he was given the title Bharathi at age eleven. As an engaged journalist, he edited periodicals such as Swadesamitran and India. Forced into exile in Pondicherry from 1910 to 1919 for his nationalist writings, he composed his major works there. He also translated sacred texts into Tamil. He died in 1921 in Madras following an accident.
