Stephen Edwin King is an American writer born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1970, he taught before achieving success with his first novel, Carrie, published in 1974. Author of over 60 books and 200 short stories, he is renowned for his horror and suspense works such as The Shining, It, and Misery. He also wrote the fantasy series The Dark Tower and the memoir on writing, On Writing. His books have been adapted into successful films, including The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. He has received numerous honors, including the National Medal of Arts in 2014.
