Stan Lee, born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York, began working at Timely Comics (later Marvel Comics) in 1939. With Jack Kirby, he co-created the Fantastic Four in 1961, launching the Marvel Age and revolutionizing the genre with psychologically complex superheroes. He co-created Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, the X-Men, Doctor Strange, and the Avengers. He served as editor, publisher, and president of Marvel, and used his editorial page to address social issues. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2008 and became famous for his cameos in Marvel films.
