Simone Signoret, born Henriette Charlotte Simone Kaminker in Wiesbaden in 1921, was a French actress and writer. She began her film career in the 1940s and became one of France's greatest actresses. She was the first French actress to win the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Room at the Top (1959). She also received three BAFTAs, a César, an Emmy, and a Silver Bear. Politically engaged on the left, she was married to Yves Montand. She wrote her autobiography and two novels. She died in 1985.
