About
Savitri Devi, pseudonym of Maximiani Julia Portas, was born in Lyon in 1905. A philosopher by training, she moved to India in 1932 where she married a Brahmin. During World War II, she supported the Axis powers. After the war, she was imprisoned in Germany for Nazi propaganda. She is known for her writings blending Hinduism and Nazi ideology, notably 'The Lightning and the Sun' (1958) and 'The Impeachment of Man' (1959), a pioneering text of deep ecology. Co-founder of the World Union of National Socialists in 1962, she remains an influential figure in esoteric far-right circles.
