Satyajit Ray was an Indian filmmaker, writer, and illustrator, regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. Born in Calcutta, he studied at Tagore's university in Santiniketan. His Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar) brought Indian cinema to world attention. He directed over 30 films, writing his own screenplays and often composing the music. He was also a prolific fiction writer, creating the detective Feluda and the scientist Professor Shanku. Ray received numerous honors, including an Honorary Oscar in 1992.
