About
Sándor Petőfi, born in 1823 in Kiskőrös, is regarded as Hungary's national poet. From a modest family, he became the first Hungarian poet to support himself solely through writing. His collection 'Versek' (1844) and epic 'János Vitéz' (1845) brought him fame. In 1848, he played a key role in the Hungarian Revolution, writing the 'Nemzeti dal' and co-authoring the 12 Points. He disappeared during the Battle of Segesvár in 1849, aged 26. His work, over 850 poems, has profoundly influenced Hungarian culture.
