About

Sami Frashëri, born in 1850 in Frashër and died in 1904 in Istanbul, is a major figure of the Albanian National Awakening (Rilindja Kombëtare). Brother of poet Naim Frashëri, he contributed to the Albanian national revival through his writings and activism. He co-founded the Central Committee for the Defence of the Rights of the Albanian Nation and the Society for the Printing of Albanian Letters. He created the Istanbul alphabet for the Albanian language and produced educational primers. In Ottoman Turkish, he wrote a pioneering novel, a play on the concept of besa, a universal encyclopedic dictionary, and a landmark dictionary.
