Salima Ghezali, born in 1958 in Bouïra, is an Algerian journalist and writer of Kabyle origin. After teaching French literature, she turned to journalism. She founded NYSSA, Algeria's first women's magazine, and edited the weekly La Nation, which was banned in 1996. Awarded the Sakharov Prize and the Olof Palme Prize in 1997, she documented the Algerian civil war and its impact on women. She is a founding member of Women in Europe and the Maghreb and president of an association for the advancement of women in Algeria.
