About

Sait Faik Abasıyanık (1906-1954) was a Turkish writer, considered the father of the modern Turkish short story. Born in Adapazarı, he studied at Istanbul University and then lived in Grenoble. His first collection, Semaver, was published in 1936. His impressionistic and humanistic style focuses on marginalized characters – fishermen, workers, children – often set in Istanbul and Burgaz Island. He also wrote novels and a poetry collection. An honorary member of the International Mark Twain Society, he bequeathed his assets to the Darüşşafaka school. The Sait Faik Short Story Award was established in 1955.
