Sacha Guitry, born Alexandre-Pierre Georges Guitry on February 21, 1885, in Saint Petersburg, was a French playwright, actor, director, filmmaker, and screenwriter. Son of the celebrated actor Lucien Guitry, he dominated Parisian boulevard theater with over 120 plays, including Deburau, Pasteur, and Béranger. He achieved his first success in 1905 with Le K.W.T.Z. and Nono. As a filmmaker of about thirty films, his most innovative work is The Story of a Cheat (1936). Appointed Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1936, he was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1939. Arrested after the Liberation in 1944, he was fully cleared in 1947. He died in Paris on July 24, 1957.
