Rosalind Russell, born June 4, 1907, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to an affluent family, studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before making her film debut in 1934. She gained recognition in The Women (1939) and triumphed in the screwball comedy His Girl Friday (1940) opposite Cary Grant. Nominated four times for the Academy Award, she won a Tony Award for Wonderful Town (1953) and five Golden Globes. Dedicated to charitable work, she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1973. She died of breast cancer in 1976. Her autobiography, Life Is a Banquet, was published posthumously in 1977.
