Robert Fisk, born in Maidstone, Kent, and died in Dublin, was a war correspondent for The Times and later The Independent, based in Beirut. He covered Middle Eastern conflicts for nearly 40 years, including the Lebanese Civil War, the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf Wars, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. He interviewed Osama bin Laden three times. Winner of the Orwell Prize in 1999 and seven times International Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards, he authored several books, including Pity the Nation and The Great War for Civilisation.
