Robert Ervin Howard, born January 22, 1906 in Peaster, Texas, and died June 11, 1936 in Cross Plains, Texas, was an American pulp fiction writer. The only child of a physician, he spent most of his life in Cross Plains. He sold his first story at age 18 to Weird Tales magazine. He is best known for creating Conan the Barbarian, whose first story, 'The Phoenix on the Sword,' appeared in 1932. He is considered the father of sword and sorcery (heroic fantasy) and also contributed to the weird western subgenre. He wrote hundreds of stories and poems across various genres, including fantasy, western, boxing, detective, historical adventure, and horror. He took his own life at age 30 while his mother was in a coma.
