About

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet and playwright, a major figure of Victorian poetry. Self-taught, educated at home by his father, he mastered several languages by his teens. He perfected the dramatic monologue, notably in his collections 'Men and Women' (1855) and 'Dramatis Personae' (1864). His epic work 'The Ring and the Book' (1868-1869) established him as a leading poet. He secretly married poet Elizabeth Barrett in 1846 and lived with her in Italy until her death in 1861. He died in Venice in 1889 and was buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey.
