Poul Anderson, born November 25, 1926 in Bristol, Pennsylvania, and died July 31, 2001 in Orinda, California, was a prolific American author of science fiction and fantasy. He earned a B.A. in physics from the University of Minnesota in 1948 and published his first novel, Vault of the Ages, in 1952. He is known for his Technic Civilization series, blending space adventure with political themes, and for his use of Norse mythology. He won seven Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards, and was named SFWA Grand Master in 1997. His final novel, Genesis (2000), won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award in 2001.
