About

Pierre Loti, born Louis-Marie-Julien Viaud in Rochefort in 1850, was a career naval officer whose travels from Turkey to Japan inspired his exotic and impressionistic novels. His first novel, Aziyadé (1879), drew on his time in Istanbul. He achieved great success with Pêcheur d'Islande (1886) and Madame Chrysanthème (1887). Elected to the Académie française in 1891, he became a major literary figure of his era. He died in 1923 in Hendaye and received a state funeral.
