Phillips Brooks, born December 13, 1835, in Boston, was a renowned Episcopal clergyman known for his eloquence. A Harvard graduate, he was ordained priest in 1860. He served in Philadelphia, then became rector of Trinity Church, Boston, from 1869 to 1891, one of the most influential Episcopal pulpits in the United States. He delivered the eulogy for Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and wrote the lyrics to the carol 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' in 1868. Bishop of Massachusetts in 1891, he died in 1893.
