Penny Marshall, born Carole Penny Marshall on October 15, 1943, in the Bronx, New York, was an American actress, director, and producer. She rose to fame as an actress in the hit sitcom Laverne & Shirley (1976-1983), earning three Golden Globe nominations. She transitioned to directing with Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), then became the first woman to direct a film grossing over $100 million at the U.S. box office with Big (1988). She also directed Awakenings (1990), nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, and A League of Their Own (1992), inducted into the National Film Registry in 2012. She published her memoir, My Mother Was Nuts, in 2012. She died on December 17, 2018, in Los Angeles.
